- Nickel 200/201 Pipes and Tubes
Nickel 200/201 Pipes and Tubes
Nickel alloy 201 & 200 pipes and tubes are a product of commercially pure nickel that has
corrosion resistance and a rather low electrical resistivity. These nickel alloy 201 and 200 pipes
and tubes are ferromagnetic and possess high thermal and electrical conductivity in comparison
to nickel–base alloys, stainless, and low alloy steels.

Production Process
Nickel alloy 201 & 200 pipes and tubes are produced such as ERW ( Electric Resistance Welded),
Seamless and EFW ( Electric Fusion Welding) pipes and tubes with different forms like round,
square, rectangle, etc. and have specific ends as a plain end, bevel end and threaded end and
have a nominal thickness of different schedule ranging from SCH 5 to SCH XXS.
The process through which nickel 200 tubing and pipes can be prepared with methods which
include cold pilgering, extrusion process, tube mill process and piercing process too; which
needs to be followed by heat treatment and mechanical testing.
Fabrication and Heat treatment
Nickel alloy 201 pipes and tubes can be shaped through all processes like hot working and cold
working. Nickel alloy 201 has a hot working temperature range of 1200° F and 2250° F, with
heavy forming temperatures above 1600°F.

Nickel 200 pipe and tubes may be annealed over a variety of temperatures above its
recrystallization temperature. For heavily cold worked material, the temperature can be 1100°F
to 1200°F (595° to 650°C), but from a practical viewpoint, the range is usually about 1300°F to
1700°F (705° to 925°C).

Ni 200/201 Seamless Tube : ASTM/ASME B 163/ SB-163
Ni 200/201 ERW Pipe : ASTM/ASME B 725/ SB-725
Ni 200/201 ERW Tube : ASTM/ASME B 730/ SB-730
Annealing should be done at a temperature between 1300°F and 1600°F. Special care needs to
be taken while choosing the annealing temperature and time at temperature for this can
greatly impact the mechanical properties and structure of the material.
Properties
Nickel 200 tubing & 201 pipes and tubes are not recommended for service above 600°F (316°C)
because long – time exposures in the 800°F to 1200°F range result in precipitation of a carbon-
containing phase and loss of ductility. Nickel 200 pipes also have a high curie temperature and
good magnetostrictive characteristics.

The minimal content of carbon in nickel UNS N02200 and UNS N02201 pipes & tubes makes it
very resistant and so is less subject to embrittlement. Alloy 200 pipes & tubes are
recommended for the construction of pressure vessels and components, where the melting
point is 2615 Degree F – 2635 Degree F.

Applications
In many applications or industries, nickel alloy 200 is used because it is resistant to corrosion
property, heat, warping, and various pressures. It is also called non-ferrous metals that contain
the properties like toughness and high strength. Besides this, it also works better in high
temperatures. As compared to other pipes and tubes, alloy nickel 200 / 201 tubes are widely
used. It is mostly utilized in the oil refinery chemical refinery, generators, etc.
